Carl Matt is a normal teenager, it is his family that is abnormal. In a time of changing a discovery about your self everyone is very different, so to say that Carl is normal is hard to prove. He bottles all his emotions in and does not stand up for himself. Beryl takes advantage of this and constantly taunts Carl and tries to make him erupt and give her a reason to kick them out. When Justine talks to Carl about why he always bottles up his emotions he realizes that people do care for him and that he is not hated anymore. From that moment on he learns to stand up to Beryl. His family was abnormal because instead of working out there problems like Carl did, they just ran away from them. Carl was the first normal person in the Matt family. He was smart and worked hard to through off the 'curse' that the Matt family name came with. The curse is the same brought by his Grandfather when he ran over Skip Duncan. The Matt family was abnormal with Carl being the odd one out. In society he was an outcast because of his size, which made him an outcast, but when he learned to get over this and open up he learnt that he was not like his family. He couldn't run away. He even stayed behind to look after Beryl when Bruce (Her Boyfriend) dumped her. He is a normal teenager and considering what he has gone through and how his family is he turned out normal.
