A Christmas Carol

The supernatural world in A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens is the world of ghosts and phantoms. These phantoms are the souls of those people who have been the sinners during their lives, and whose sins now have the air of chains. Their quantity is much bigger than the quantity of ghosts who are the envoys of God, the angels. Only three of them, the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Future, appear in the novel and are being examined in research papers, and this symbolic number is evidence of their divine origin. The Ghost of Christmas Past is "a strange figure - like a child: yet not so like a child as like an old man". Its appearance proves that Scrooge in his childhood has been wiser than now when he is in adolescence. His childish kindness, naivete, spontaneity, and faith in miracles have turned into egoism, vanity, and mercantilism.

The pictures from the present showing by the Ghost of Christmas Present tell about it: the negative but deserved attitude to Scrooge of his nephew, and of the Cratchits. The ghost of Christmas Future has no face, and no form. The unknown dark future stretches to Scrooge its hand, and it depends only on Ebenezer what it will be. Thus, the goal of these ghosts is to warn Scrooge, to protect him from the fate of phantoms. In an essay, three social levels have to be explored. At the head of all ghosts and phantoms is God. Ghosts are his assistants. They direct people to the right way. Phantoms are the souls of people, who expiate their sins. The commandments of God are the main law here.
