A Journey to the Center of the Earth

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a science fiction novel, written in 1864 by Jules Verne. Having discovered an ancient runic manuscript, a scientist, his nephew and their guide are undertaking a journey to the center of the Earth by entering a volcano off Iceland (the Sneffel). As usual in Jules Verne's novels, there is a skillful blend of scientific data, daring extrapolations and adventure. Your research paper should note that the introduction of the novel reflects the enthusiasm for a cryptology, young science at that time. Further goes a description of Iceland in the late nineteenth century, and the extensive introduction to two other booming sciences, paleontology and geology. The narrator is Lidenbrock Axel, nephew of an eminent German naturalist and geologist, Professor of Mineralogy Otto Lidenbrock. The story begins in Hamburg, in the house of Prof. Lidenbrock. The teacher, a lover of old books, bought the original manuscript of an Icelandic saga, Heimskringla, written by Snorri Sturluson in the twelfth century. He discovers a coded parchment, written in runic characters.

Axel and his uncle are excited by this cryptogram, and they eventually decipher and identify that there is a message from Arne Saknussemm, an alchemist of the sixteenth century. He claims to have discovered a passage to the center of the Earth, via the Sneffels volcano in Iceland. Professor Otto Lidenbrock is an enthusiastic and impetuous man. He decides to leave the next day for Iceland, taking with him his nephew Axel, much more reluctant. In Reykjavik, they hire a hunter named Hans Bjelke, which will be their guide. The three men travel to the foot of the volcano Sneffels and make the ascent. To find out more about adventures of these men, order a custom essay from our company.
