The first and foremost reasons that these items above are said to be censored is to protect our youth. Censorship of these three items is not hard to find. Another reason that censorship is said to be used is to warn parents against allowing their children to get a hold of explicit materials. While media, books, and music all have ways of warning parents against provocative material, warnings of media and music are much more evident. The media's disclaimer is a rating that will come up at the beginning of every television show that tells parents what age groups that particular television show is aimed towards. Television stations are also required to make an announcement before every televised movie explaining its content and whether parental discretion is advised. The disclaimer for music is a different; it is a small sticker that is placed on the front of every CD or cassette that is found guilty of any material that may be considered as inappropriate for today's young adults.

It is also important to discuss who is involved in censoring the material that we protect our youth from. There are many different places that materials can be banned, such as schools, churches, music, parents, and media. In the case of school books and videos are banned form libraries and individual classes. The decision to ban material found in the typical school library is controlled by the school board. Any material they deem inappropriate for the students at their school will immediately be taken of the shelves and restricted from the students. Teachers also have the right to censor what goes on in their classroom. Although they do not have complete control over what material they have to cover in the course of a semester they do have the final say in what they allow their students to write about for papers in class and read for outside reading projects. In the world of television and movies scriptwriters are in charge of altering the material that is allowed during certain time period or allowed by a certain rating. The people that hold these positions are the people that censor material from our youth.
